Member and Diplomat of the Year
Member of the Year
Shelbyville / Shelby County Parks and Recreation has been named the 2018 Shelby County Chamber of Commerce’s Member of the Year. Shawn Pickens, Director of Parks and Recreation, says “This award would not be possible without the hard working and dedicated staff of the park system from top to bottom as well as the many other committee members of the chamber and volunteers from the community.”
Pickens served on the Programs Committee of the Chamber in 2016 and 2017 and served as chairman of the committee in 2018 and will continue to serve as chairman in 2019. Pickens also currently serves as President-elect and will serve as President of the Chamber in late 2019 and 2020. Chamber Executive Director John Wieland says that “Shawn continually goes above and beyond to ensure we have successful events. He’s a natural for the Programs Committee with his extensive experience in managing parks events and programs.”
Other Parks employees are also making important contributions to the Chamber. Parks Administrative Assistant, Ashley Coulter, serves on the Chamber’s Marketing Committee, and Assistant Athletics Director, Taylor Grayson, serves on the Membership Committee. The Chamber is proud to recognize Shelbyville / Shelby County Parks and Recreation as Member of the Year.
Diplomat of the Year
Ashley Cassity has been selected as the Diplomat of the Year for the second year in a row. Ashley’s an extremely dedicated member of the Chamber of Commerce and devotes a good deal of his time to the Chamber’s Membership Committee. As a Chamber Diplomat, Ashley attends the monthly meetings of the committee. He promotes the activities of the Chamber, assists new members with taking advantage of member benefits, and solicits feedback from members on ways the Chamber can better serve them. In the course of a year, Ashley contacts nearly sixty Chamber members.
But he’s also willing to put his shoulder to the grindstone when needed. Each year in preparation for the Chamber’s Showcase, he helps set up the stage and lay the floor covering. He can be found on his hands and knees pulling and tugging on the covering and extending his arms hoisting the stage boards. There’s no task too humble or demanding for Ashley. It’s the same at the Chamber’s Taste and Tunes. Ashley’s there, sweeping floors, emptying trash, setting up tents, and moving furniture.
The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to have someone as dedicated as Ashley Cassity serve as one of their diplomats. He truly deserves to be recognized as the 2018 Diplomat of the Year.
